Author RewriteRule doesn't play nice with Location

I've discovered that when I use a rewriterule to divert a user to a
different URL from which they originally requested, my <Location>
sections still pick up the original request. That makes sense in
retrospect since the request still acts as if it is coming from the
original URL. Is there any way to get around this, to get the
RewriteRule to act more like an external redirect?
