Author Authorised user cannot log in

The usual apologies if this is not the correct group or if it has been
answered a million times before.

I have a password-protected directory on a shared-hosting server
(Apache/1.3.29). One user cannot log in, although I have checked her
login myself using her username/password, without encountering any
problems. She says she has copied and pasted the username and password,
but the system rejects her as an unauthorized user after three
attempts.

I've been searching for possible causes without success. Would this be
something to do with her browser settings? I believe she is using
Internet Explorer but I have no information on how it is configured.
The user is located in Sweden. Presumably a keyboard set up for
Scandinavian characters would not cause a problem - or would it?

I'd be very grateful for any pointers on this.
