Author Upper limits of Apache?

I'm looking for info on the theoretical / practical limitations of
Apache. Assuming a decent machine, plenty of RAM, and unlimited network
bandwidth, how many hits / visits / # of MB of throughput can Apache
handle until it starts crapping out? Links to info about tuning Apache
would be nice, too.
