URGENT QUESTION -- WINDOWS XP PRO VS. WINDOWS SERVER
|
|
|
| Hi all,
Please give me advice regarding problem described below. I do not have
much experience with systems etc. but I must make right decision.
Information you provide, will greatly help me to choose right path and
hire right specialist.
1. I need to run web server to receive heavy traffic with many
simultaneous connections. I need to run multimedia database which is
stand-alone server application with web site engine based on java
technology. I need to run FTP with light traffic, and, possibly, MAIL
and DNS servers. And of course, the whole thing should be quite
secure.
2. I got a brand new server machine with Silicone Image SATA
controllers for RAID support. I installed trial version of Windows
Server 2003 Enterprise, installed upgrades too. Windows Server 2003
simply failed to support my SATA controllers (?). Original drivers
from the manufacturer of SATA, Silicone Image, also failed to run on
Server 2003. RAID hard drives were invisible drivers kept crashing.
3. I removed Windows Server 2003 and installed Windows XP Pro which I
purchased license for. SATA and hard drives started working like a
charm.
4. Now I have a dilemma about web server. IIS is not an option with
its 10 simultaneous connections support. Of course I can buy Server
2000 and everything will be fine. But I do not have much budget.
Besides I already have Win XP Pro.
QUESTION: Given the problem stated in the #1 please advise me
-- Do I absolutely need to get Server version of MS Windows?
-- Will Windows XP utilize resources of the server hardware? If yes,
will I achieve needed support for traffic and large number of stored
user names by installing third party WEB and FTP server applications
(Apache, etc.) on Windows XP pro machine?
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ANY ADVICE.

What MB?

S2003 supports my SATA drives. The drivers for XP are the same for 2003, so
you must have XXXXed something up.

Based on your list, yes.
