Dear Friends,

I'll be setting up an apache Server (2.0.53) in a few weeks. I'd like
to get a 'friendly' (read cheap or free) FTP Server to work on both a
Win98SE machine (for testing) and later on a Win XP Pro machine.

Any suggesrtions please ??

Outhouse Express is NOT a newsreader. It is a GUI frontend for worms and
viruses.

Check out WarFTPd (http://www.warftp.org/) and Filezilla Server
(http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/).

Eggs & Nil,

I've downloaded bothe Bulletproof and WarFTP, and have tried them.

Comments:

Bulletproof installed perfectly for 15 days and then it will stop before
I pay a small shareware fee

WarFTP did not install properly, but the executable (WDM.EXE) 'appears'
to work correctly and it is free.

Will have to mull on which system is best for me as I get up to speed.

My need is to service 8 small related companies and some of their
employees in sending stock levels and additions/deletions from the branches
to the 'head' company.

I should have made a note that I prefer Filezilla Server over
WarFTP. WarFTP is somewhat half-baked, IMO, and the author has been
promising big improvents and refinements for many years, but has
done very little. It works pretty well, though, and the way it
handles users and permissions is good. Filezilla is being very
actively developed and there are frequent fixes and improvements,
which counts for something in my book. It's user/permissions
paradign is a little more confusing than War's

Still, both do the job reasonably well.

Good luck.

Hi Mel... as to Bulletproof, I've had it (registered) since it was known as
Gene6. It's always performed up to my expectations, and although I no
longer use it for any online FTPing, I use it on my internal network. You
asked for "free or cheap", so I offered "cheap". The cost is reasonable
IMO, and you don't have to worry about paying more down the road for
updates. =)

Nil & Eggs,

Thanks again for the additional notes. Will not exclude either of these
packages until I get more familiarity with both (and probably I'll look into
FileZilla too).

I haven't used Filezilla as much as WarFTP, but it seems to be more stable.

Desperately needs someone who can design a user interface better than a
chimp, though.

Terry,

I've tried three times today (and tonite) to download:

FileZilla_2_2_12_setup.exe (from the sourceforge suggested mirrors.
Since, I'm in Arizona, I used two mirror sites, but all I keep getting is
the advertisements at the top of the screen -- the download never starts !
(Tried everytnig under the sun(and moon) but no Joy ! )

I'm getting a bit frustrated here. Any suggestions ??

You're trying to download the FTP client rather than the server. You
want FileZilla_Server_0_9_5.exe .

Don't worry too much about finding the closest mirror. Sometime I
find they are the slowest and I can get it much faster from a site
halfway around the world. I also find that I need to disable popup
stoppers and enable javascript for some download pages (not
necessarily this one) to work.

Try one of these:

http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourc...erver_0_9_5.exe

http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/...erver_0_9_5.exe

http://cogent.dl.sourceforge.net/so...erver_0_9_5.exe

http://jaist.dl.sourceforge.net/sou...erver_0_9_5.exe

Nil,

Thanks for the guidance again.

I'll try your download sites. (I *did* try the middle two (i.e.,
internap & cogent) for the client. Will go back again and try the server
download.

Thanks again !

I use argosofts free ftp server... works well, if a bit tricky to
figure out (username/no users etc).. play with it and it works like
a charm once you have it set up the way you want it to

Dear Smithcr ( Christine or Charlie Smith ??? )) )

Thanks for the guidance. I'll try to locate this Argosoft server on the
net.
