Cannot get default page to load

Hi,
Very new to apache just trying to learn php and mysql through a book and
stuck on the first page.
Having installed apache 1.3 onto my windows system as a service the program
appears to be running quite happy, but I cannot get the default page, using
either localhost or 127.0.0.1.

Please help I would like to get a little further with this book than page 1.

Look at your server logs.
