The CX-5200 is known to work with the SANE epson backend code:
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-EPSON
With reasonable luck, the CX-5400 will have the same programming
interface.
How I found that: In my knowledgebase's hardware category,
http://linuxmafia.com/kb/Hardware , you'll see an entry called "Help
Resources". That's my link-farm page for Linux hardware information
of all kinds.
On the page you reach though that mechanism, there's a section about
scanners, and the SANE site is the first of several links. The SANE
site lets you search for "Supported Devices" (in either the stable or
development branch) by manufacturer name, among other things. Et voila!
