| Hi,
i would like to install linux on the mentioned hardware. I have Mandrake
10.2, Suse 9.3 and Knoppix 3.3 on DVD's from computer magazines. I
tried Mandrake, it installed without any problem. But then came with
Kernel Panic (not syncing - no init found, try to pass ..).
So i tried Suse but it did not even find the harddisk. HD is a 160 GB
Seagate PATA attached to the on board PATA controller.
What confuses me is that Mandrake has no problem with the controller
during install, but when I try to boot the kernel panics.
Knoppix 3.3 runs fine. But i heard that installing Koppix to the hd is
rather difficult.
So the question is: Does anybody know of a good distribution that would
run on the hardware out of the box. Or will i have to wait for the next
releases and hope that then it is supported.
As the Pentium D has EMT64 should i try the amd/emt64 version?

| Hi,
I have had similar problems in the past when installing Mandrake where
the install went fine and then booting after the install would panic the
kernel sometime shortly after. The solution was to configure the boot
option "pci=noacpi" in lilo.conf or grub.conf. That fixed it for me anyway.
Good luck,
