I keep getting this error message when trying to burn with gtoaster.
System RH9 and gtaoster1.0.

ERROR: Cannot open SCSI device '0,6,0': Cannot open '/dev/pg6'
ERROR: Please use option '--device bus,id,lun', e.g. --device 0,6,0
ERROR: Cannot setup device 0,6,0.

Child exited unexpectedly.
CD recording process finished.

I can't tell what's going on here. Have know idea where the option
specified is supposed to be used.

gtoaster is looking for the cd writer at the 0,6,0 scsi address, but
can't find it.

Is 0,6,0 where your cd writer is located? If you're not sure you can use
cdrecord -scanbus to try and find the bus address for your writer. The
option is presumably given on the commandline when the program is
launched,

The rsults off that command. Which I did execute as root.

[lnx03]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 J=F6rg
Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot
open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you
are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=3Dhelp'.

I'm sorry it's such a long time since I've had to deal with this version
of linux that I can't remember. Do a google search with this phrase
'cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot
open SCSI driver' and you'll get lots of hits.

OTOH, on my laptop, I get a similar error when I try to do "cdrecord
-scanbus". My DVD-RW is IDE, and I'm using a 2.6 kernel, so I just pass
in "dev=/dev/hdc" and everything works (despite Joerg's bitching about
dev= "being unintentional and not supported".)

So: How is your CD-RW connected? I doubt that it's parport. Is it IDE
or USB? (Or is it SCSI? It might be, if it's really really old.)
Which version of which distro are you using? What's the output of
"uname -a"? Your cdrecord looks pretty old.

See first paragraph. I'm guessing that the OP's using a 2.6 kernel and
has an IDE CD-RW, so -scanbus doesn't work like it used to.

It is, see below.

That info had been snipped (my bad) :-( The OP is using RH9 so is more
than likely to be using 2.4 kernel with ide-scsi emulation layer, which
is why I forget exactly how to solve the situation. Hence the
suggestion to google as there's loads of info out there.

My CD/RW is only about 6 months old, I recently added a new hard drive
in the mix and moved my CD/RW to the secondary master position. The OS
detects it as "hdc". I can still playback DVDs and read data CDs
without problems. Its just trying to perform a burn where things are
hosed. I'll do the google search to see what I get. Yeah, I know
RH9(2.4.20-8) is old but I need to stay there because of another
product I use for work that requires this platform.
Such is the nature of the beast!!!

And when you mount a data CD, are you mounting /dev/scd0 or /dev/hdc ?
If the latter, cdrecord won't work at all until you fix your ide-scsi
emulation.

> Its just trying to perform a burn where things are hosed.

Has ide-scsi been modprobed? Check with lsmod. If it hasn't been
modprobed, modprobe it. Do you have "hdc=ide-scsi" in the kernel
command line? If not, and you have ide-cd loaded, then ide-cd will grab
the CD-RW and *not let go*. This will prevent you from using cdrecord
and cdrdao (maybe cdparanoia too). Best bet is to go in to
/lib/modules/2.4* and rm -f all instances of ide-cd, so it *can't* get
loaded, but that may be too much....

This product is *seriously* broken if it depends on a particular version
of a particular distro. Name it so that other people can avoid it.

Thanks to all. Life is good now. I went ahead and move out the
ide-cd.o module from /lib/modules/... Added hdc=3Dide-scsi to the boot
command line. Reset the cdrom link from hdc to scd0. Rebooted and
tested gtoaster and mplayer. Making a slight change to the perferences
to each application to use /dev/scd0 and all went well.

This is a completely outdated version of cdrecord.
It is most unlikely that it is able to deal with recent
Linux Kernel bugs......

Fetch a recent version of cdrtools:

If you are using a Linux version from the time after Linus Torvalds et. al.
did intentionally break Linux Kernel interfaces in order to make the
life for CD/DVD recording software harder, you need a cdrecord version
that adds workarounds for the Linux Kernel self incompatibilities....

ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/alpha/

note that it is not possible to add work arounds for all vulgarities
added by the Linux kernel folks, but I still do my best. If
The linux kernel fols become more malicious than they currently
are, it may be that I need to drop Linux support.

You are using a product that is definitely broken!

Note that this "DVD-patch" is completely useless as
it does not work devently and as it even breaks the CD
writing part of cdrecord.

Better get glean working original software:
