Hard Drive Solution For Backup To Disk

| I'm looking for recommendations on some sort of hot swap drive arrangement
to use with a virtual tape backup solution using a couple large disks.
Basically, here's what I need to do:
Backup software will backup to virtual tapes on one hard drive daily.
Full backup will be done on another drive each Friday.
All of this is easy. The problem is that I wanted hot swap drives to use
with this, however the only hot swap enclosures/controllers I can find
require a RAID configuration. I cannot find anything that will allow hot
swapping of a single drive.
A second desire if possible would be for the drive letters for the two
drives to not change if a drive was removed so the virtual tape software
could be configured and left alone.

We aren't going the hot-swap route. Instead we're going
to have a dedicated workstation with removable drive
bays that we can shutdown to swap out the drives. Plus,
we're using 5400rpm PATA drives to make sure the drives
don't overheat in sub-standard environments. I'm not
sure if I'll put the virtual tape files directly to the
removable drive, or simply copy them over prior to
changing drives.
(WinXP doesn't always gracefully handle hot-plug
drives.)
The StarTech DRW115 series removable bays include hot-
swap software... no idea of how good or bad it is.

| Thanks for the response. I think I'm gonna ditch the hard drive idea and go
to two tape drives. It's not as fast as hard drive, but we do open file
backups anyway, so it's not that big of a problem. Besides, for the amount
of data we're backing up, in the long run I think tape is still the most
cost effective choice since I already have the backup software.

We have a severe love-hate relationship with our AIT2
tape drive. (Swapped it out once, tried the replacement
in multiple systems... can't get a reliable backup even
trying other software.)
Probably end up with a two-prong backup. Virtual tape
for quick-restoration needs, with the tape files copied
off to removable hard drives (swapped weekly) and taken
offsite.
If we then get the tape drive solved, we'll use that for
archiving and snapshots. The question of the moment is
whether to ditch the AIT2 drive and the tapes we've
bought ($3k up in smoke) and replace it with DLT ($4500
for the drive, plus tapes. Or do we hit ebay and buy 2
or 3 used AIT2 drives so that we have a working pair
plus a spare in a drawer.
