I am testing different backup software. I have tried Novabackup, NTI backup
Now!, and Retrospect. Novabackup is the only piece of software that worked
successfully.After testing these pieces of software I have some questions

Why does some software work and others do not ?
The error always comes at approx. the same point of the backup process,
the beginning of the verification process after all data has been written
to the media. It seems like a session , i.e.. the writing of disk, has
closed and the software cannot open the cd again to starting reading and
verifying. I have updated the firmware of my CD writer, and tried several
types of media (CDs) including cdrs and cdrws different types My cdwriter
is supported by all three software packages.

What is a good brand name of cd and cdrw to use ?
the cds would be in storage and I do not want them to go bad

In your opinion what are good pieces of software to check out and use ?
I would like to do file by file backups and entire disk backups. During the
file backup I would prefer to use a differential backup. I do not want to
use packet writing but would not be adverse to having that as an option.
logs and error reporting a must Simplicity a
preferred item What is your opinion of the software I tested.

your opinion of packet writing vs.nonpacket writing for use in backups

When using Novabackup why does it take so long to open ?

The best CD-R/CD-RW media to use is that recommended by your drive's
manufacturer.

Backing up to a CD/CD-RW is more difficult than backing up to a hard drive
because there may be interaction with other CD writing software and vendors
tend to get CD/CD-RW file structures screwed up.

You would be far better backing up to an external hard drive.

I just spent quite a bit of time looking at a variety of
programs and chose Backup 2004. Includes a built-in burner which
worked very well from the beginning (unlike several of the
others). Seems very full-featured and I got excellent responses
from support. If you own other backup software, they do offer a
competitive upgrade.

I've used packet writing quite a bit and find it fairly
unreliable. That is consistent with what I've read as well.

I saw one recommendation to use 650mb CD's rather than large
capacity ones for backup, but don't knokw if there is anything
to it.
