I have been trying to backup my system using ntbackup. I am an novice and I
would like some help with this. The problem is I would like to backup to
DVD.

Not just a partial backup but total. Can ntbackup do this for me or do I
need more software.

I do not believe NT backup will write straight to DVD.
Unless you're using a RW disc in packet mode (which can
be very flaky).

NTBackup is quite happy writing to external USB/firewire
drives or a 2nd hard drive, which is probably a better
solution. You could always burn those backup files to
DVD if you want a snapshot.

However, for true "total" backups (of the o/s and
programs) look at Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image
(?). Much easier to use and to restore from.

Also, you should have a separate system for backing up
your data files. Data changes a lot more often then
system configuration does. Why backup 20GB worth of
programs and operating system files when you could just
backup the 2GB worth of data?

FYI, True Image is available at a discounted price at

I've used it on several systems now and it is extremely easy to use.
