I have two or three questions about retrospect 6.5 Pro, as a backup
solution.

I could not understand if it is possible:

1. Restore a set of folders contained in a snapshot "as they were" at
the time of the backup (i.e. with no one file more, no one file less)
in one single go. By using "restore volume" I was able to restore each
single folder - one at the time - by putting each one where it was
when I did the backup. Retrospect in fact completely replaced each
current folder with the backup one. But I was not able to restore at
the same time more folders let say in the root C:\ without Retrospect
cleaning in this root all the rest of the folders, that where not
backuped and that should not be cancelled (please keep in mind that I
want to erase the files that are added afterwards in the folders that
have been backed up).

2. I could not understand if this version of R. is able to backup
fully the WINNT folder and related various preferences folders of the
WIN2k OS or if I need to do that an extra add-in piece of software for
the open files. For instance the backup I tried, it gave me an error
of file sharing as follows:
"File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat": can't read,
error -1020 (sharing violation)"
and
"File "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG": can't
read, error -1020 (sharing violation)"

Is this an important missing, or it is not? If I replace WINNT and
related folders with the Restore volume Shall I be able to run Win2k,
or I am going into trouble, due to some missing files, that failed to
backup?
Thanks for any help

You can delete the curent directory, then restore the old version.

Due to an aalefed backup API that MSFT has, tho nobody has ever been able to
point me to a copy, backup software these daze operates on the system state
as a whole and does not allow you to backup/restore selected files that are
part of the system state.

So if you tell REtrospect to backup the system state, REtrospect will
allegedly do the right thing. You just cannot deal with those files
individually via Retrospect.

Only if there are bugs in Retrospect.
But you will not be able to partially restore the system state, onlt ttjhe
whole kit and kaboodle at a time.
