Experts,

I'm looking for a guide/ pointer that will reduce some of the steps
needed to restore our Win 2003 server should the entire hard disk
crash.

We use Windows Backup on our Windows 2003 server to quickly create
full backups to disk which we then transfer to tape.

I know that while the full backups store our System State details
(registry, active directory, sys files...) there is still going to be
a need to re-install the O/S of the Windows 2003 server to the "new"
hard disk.

Does Microsoft have a way of making that easier...such as creating a
bootable CD that would reduce the server restoration process?

Our supplier said that the only way to have it so convenient is to
invest in a 3-rd party backups software that supports bare-metal
recovery (like BackupExec or Tapeware).

Is that the only way?

Thanks

Look at Dantz Retrospect, www.dantz.com.

Check out Symantec's LiveState Recovery Advanced Server. I use it and
think it's wonderful. I use it to back up live Win 2003 servers over the
network disk-to-disk style, not via tape, so I cannot vouch for what tape
capabilities it has, if any.

Veritas's BackupExec bare metal restore procedure is anything but simple.
Been there, done that.
