| If you back-up your entire HD...format your HD and reinstall Windows,
and then restore your your back up, you will reinstall everything that
is on your backup...the good, bad and the ugly. At least that is the
way it is with Ghost and I assume Drive Image is no different.
If you really want to get rid of a lot junk you will need to do a
clean reinstall of Windows (plus any service paks" and then go through
the laborious task of re-installing the applications you desire.
You might have some other options if you have more than just the "C"
partition.
Maybe somebody else can give you some shortcuts to make your work
easier.

As a Drive image user, I confirm that.

Alan: May I suggest that you do this. I did.
Reinstall absolutely everything from scratch. (I really do mean _Everything_)
It is a Pain in the XXX, yes. But with Drive image
you only have to do this once. And, it's worth it.
A friend of mine used a hole -4- days reinstalling the old fasion way.
a few hours just installing, the next 4 days he did nothing but configuring.
he made all email filtering rules, email accounts, news grups settings...
He literally configured the system exactly as he would do the old way.
Only this time he did ALL in one go.
(Now he only uses some 15 minutes restoring that backup,
and he's back up and running.)
When the installation is complete (with Windows update)
Backup the drive with Drive Image.
I personally save that perfect copy on CD's.
If you save the backup on a CD set (using Drive image)
the CD's are bootable.
Now you have a Clean backup, and a nice install/restore CD.
Next time you need to reinstal, restore _That_ backup.
After my friend showed me this, I bought my own copy of Drive Image :-)=
Saved me a lot of work a few times.

| Thanks, guys, that's what I feared. So, as you say, nothing fancy, just do
it the old fashioned way.
I do like the suggestion of doing a Drive Image immediately after getting it
all set up the way you want it and before you get a chance to screw it up
again. That's a smart idea.

No it's not smart. You use Drive Image 2002, go to dos, wait about 15min
when it backs up,
and this is only one copy of drive. I use Retrospect, still work in windows,
every incremental
backup waste time only few second, have as many copyes of drive as I want
and practically still the
same amount of media usage (as you with DI2002) - just funny joke.
:-)))))))

Yes, but this is for making a Clean Perfect rescue disk(s).
So that _IF_ the time comes when he really do need to reinstall everything,
he only use some 15-30 min (depending on computer speed)
and not a few hours like i'm sure he did before he got DI.
Remember, this perfect copy/backup is a backup of the system
as he want t system to be when he install all programs he normally use.
(Like Winamp, email program, email settings, antivirus.. the lot)
For the normal regular daily/weekly backup, this is not needed, I agree.
But one ought to have one emergency backup kit, stored on removable media.
It was this one emergency backup I was talking about.

For better or for worse, I go a little further: I take an image right after the
base Windows install - as soon as I've got LAN and internet connectivity
working.
Then I install my "base" applications - i.e. the ones I use every day...and take
another snapshot.
From there on, I just keep taking a snapshot after each new or several new
installs.
Haven't had to recover yet - I'm just hoping all this works...but it seems like
the multiple backups should be a little extra protection - or at least give more
flexibility in recovery options..
