I know this is a software forum, but can anyone recommend for me the best of
AIT-3, VXA-2, SuperDLT and LTO formats?

Thanks!

I know little about the others, but can definitely recommend LTO. Have it at
three installations currently, and hoping to make it 4/5 in the near future.

One thing I would say is to ensure that you have a decent support contract
for the drive, as we have had a few problems with drives having failures,
but I put that down mainly to the fact that you have moving parts having to
move very very fast to produce the backup speeds they offer.

Best tapeformat on the market is StorageTek 9940B, but from your list
I would go for LTO-2

This depends on your requirements. If you have a decent number of high-end
systems to back up then LTO-2 may be the right way. But only if you really
need 200GB native capacity, and you can send data at a decent rate. LTO-2 is
a 30MB/s native device, higher with compression. Not many systems can
actually deliver data at that rate. LTO-2 are top gear but cost a lot of
money. Especially if you want to automate for hands-off operation, using an
LTO library.

If you have mid-range servers then VXA-2 is a great match (please note I'm
biassed, I work for Exabyte). Great capacity (80GB native) and speeds that
match the capability of today's mid-range servers. Low-cost and reliable
automation products available when you need them.

SuperDLT appears to suffer from a declining market share. From what I heard
the drives work OK, but LTO is taking their market away. As for AIT, also a
product that works well, but they are losing market share to VXA. HP (the
largest AIT OEM) just put their AIT offeringings on the discontinued product
list.

Thanks all for the input. I am not familiar with the StorageTek format, I'll
ck that out - but it might be bigger than we need. 100GB native is OK for
me.

Wow - VXA-2 80gig tapes are $100 and AIT-3 tapes at 100gig are $50. That's
strange - and also a big cost factor when I need 30 of them! Anyone know if
this is fully correct? These are prices at insight.com.

Thanks,

Pricewatch.com shows VXA-2 tapes around $80 single price. I'm sure if you
call the place and want to order 30 they'll be less. Or e-mail
sales@exabyte.com and request a quote. I'm sure if you mention AIT they can
do something for you.

AIT-3 tapes are $50-$60 (100GB native)
AIT-2 tapes are $50-$60 (50GB native)

Drive costs are $900-$1000 for AIT-2 and $3400 for AIT-
3.
