I have a 2.5GHz Sony PC with 120 MB internal HD with XP.

I am using Ghost to backup C+D partitions about 20Gb to an external USB HD.

The backup process takes more than 12 hours to run and another 12+ hours to
verify.
I have also backed up C and D separately but with no improvement in the time
it takes to run. Also it
seems that Sony has a hidden diagnostic partition, which Ghost cant quite
handle and fails on the verify.

After several removals and installs of Ghost, I need to get something that
can do the job in much less time
what is a "bigger and better" package for backing up or cloning the
internal HD to an external drive.
Thanks
Stan

Drive Image has (I hear) "incremental" imaging...

However, you should probably seperate backing up your
operating system from backing up your data files.
Typically, you only touch a few hundred meg worth of
data files per day, not the gigabytes of program code on
the drive (which you can restore from the install media
anyway).

My preference is Second Copy 2000 for backing up my data
files, with imaging the drive every few weeks using
Norton Ghost. To restore to a known point, I'd re-image
the drive, then load my data files back on.

Of course it takes long time, because it's not backup software - don't trust
all kind of advertisements that software company puts for dumbusers, rather
think with your own brains.

For unknown filesystems don't use file-based imaging, but rather
sector-based.

Don't do things that you don't understand with computers - this experiment
don't help you.

Use correct backup software like Dantz Retrospect.

Ayup.
I would never use a so called "image backup".

I too use Retrospect, and, IMHO, it could perform better, but it does
intelligently handle incremental file backups.

I use a slow, compared with your system, Pentium II 400 to backup to
external USB drive.
I backed up and compared about 31GB the other day. Total time was about
10:29:21.

Try using Max Blaster from Maxtor, it is Windows XP driven software and it
is pure and simple. No mess and would make a whole backup of your C drive to
whatever detected drive that is hooked up to your system ea. external,
internal, USB, SATA, etc...
