Drive Image 7.03 blows 2nd DVD

| Hey folks,
I got Drive Image 7.01 and patched it to 7.03 (49MB?!) to
insure the best compliance with my new Dell's NEC
CD/DVD+RW ND2100AD. The closest their "Gear Pro"
compliance list comes is a CD/DVD+RW ND2100 -- and DI7
did recognize and write to the drive.
It was a 3-DVD job, and DI7 filled up one DVD+RW in about
14 minutes, then prompted me for a second disk and filled
that in about the same time.
Just when I expected to be prompted for the third disk, I
got "Cannot proceed, write protected or not formatted or
something": (error ea390007) I had to cancel. (The reason
I use RWs is for testing burns. This would have given me
two coasters, and DVDs aren't all *that* cheap just yet.)
A Nero6 examination of Disk 1 showed DI7 had written
4.3GB of a 4.4 total capacity (4,483MB new or erased).
There were 282MB available. Disk 2 had 4.5GB written, 0
bytes available! No wonder it went down.
Any idea why DI7.03, apparently happy writing to the
hardware, suddenly decides to write every last byte on
one disk and then crash? These were both DVD+RWs that had
been written to and "Quick" erased in Nero. Did a bad
erase screw with my test strategy? (Nero can be very
flaky.)
Any ideas greatly appreciated, especially if Michael
Kimmer happens on this. I'm a fan of your DI7 posts!
Best,
Travis

Possible causes for a complex sector based image creation on DVD are as
numerous as there are ppl with a last name like Williams in London. People
think that imaging on DVD is as simple and something obvious like writing
image on a HDD...well unfortunately it is not!
Unfortunately, I know nothing about your system, but let me work through a
standard list of (initial) questions:
1. - Your 8 speed DVD writer (the NEC CD/DVD+RW ND2100AD); does it truly
come with the latest firmware onboard? You may want to use Nero Burning ROM
or similar software to find out the installed firmware version (menu:
Recorder > Choose Recorder...) and compare it with the one that is offered
bny the manufacturer.
2. - Do you have the Nero InCD, Rosio Easy CD Creator's DirectCD, Pinnacle
DVD authoring software that comes with emulation software, or similar
software? Fact is that Gear has an issue supporting various versions of the
disk format UDF. Drive Image 7.04 (ask tech support for it) comes with a new
set of Gear drivers for your drive. Paying a visit to the Gear website may
also be a good thing to plan...
3. - Do NOT use Quick Erase in Nero, use Full Erase. In case of troubles use
a lower Erase speed...
4. - Make sure that Symantec software like NIS, NAV, Password Manager,
SystemWorks is temporarily disabled when planning an image. Same applies
actually to all resident software that may interfere with the process of
image writing...
5. - Do NOT rely on cheap DVD disks...
6. - In case of USB 2.0 drives that are connecting on a USB 1.1 machines it
may lead to problems as well. A notorious error is the CORRUPTED_BUNDLE
(EA39070A) message.
7. - Go for Drive Image 7.04...
