i'm looking for some software that'll backup my entire harddrive to external
media (DVD+R probably), so that'll i'll be able to format the harddrive and
completely put everything back as it was. the only backup software i've got
now would need to be ran from in windows, so wouldn't be much. the
harddrives 200GB, but theres only about 40GB being used. can anyone
recommend something? thanks in advance.

I don't think you would like backing up 40GB to a DVD disks.. I copy
my entirehard drive to an external hard drive using
Ghost2003...running it from DOS and making it a "Disk to Disk" backup.
You don't need to either format or partition your backup hard
drive...Ghost does it automatically. Hard drives are not nearly as
expensive as they use to be. I did have a hard drive failure and my
backup restored everythig right down to the last byte.

Thanks for the reply. Would backing up to DVDs really be difficult? It'd
only be 6 disks wouldn't, or less if compression could be used.

I've seen Ghost and Image Drive being mentioned for software, but looking at
the customer reviews of them on amazon, a lot of people have had trouble
with them both, so I was a bit wary of trying them.

Backing up to DVD's wouldn't be "difficult" but it would be time
consuming and would a real pain if you were backing up twice a week
such as I do. I have used "Simple Backup"...a backup program that came
with my Sony DVD player and it is SLOW.

Ghost 2003 requires a learning curve. The "Help" info is not the best
to be sure. I only run Ghost from DOS with a floppy....yeah, I know
you can run it from Windows but I prefer to run from DOS.

I think a lot of complaints about Ghost might be from not full
understanding of it's workings. Also, I have just a single computer
with no networking so I don't know about any problems with that. I do
know Ghost2003 saved my "bacon" on two separate occasions so I am
happy with it.

I always run full backup's and never incrementals....my friend runs a
lot of incrementals and he is comfortable doing that. Everybody has
there own way of backing up as well as their own preferences as to the
backup program they prefer.

Good luck and regardless of what you decide, backup and backup often.
I had a computer crash about 7 years ago and I lost some important
data and family pictures....yep, I had no backup then and I vowed not
to ever let that happen again.
