Drive Image 7 doesn't see 2nd disk when restoring
|
|
|
| This computer has two physical drives. There are three partitions on
each drive. There are two installations of XP Pro: one in the first
partition of each drive. It boots to either one with no problems.
My first operation with Drive Image 7 was to make an image of the
C:system partition, saving it in a backup partition on the second
disk. So far, so good.
The problem comes when trying to restore that image over the scratch
installation on the second disk. Drive Image sees the second disk in
order to find the image to restore, but then it doesn't see the second
disk at all when I want to select the second disk as a destination!
Any clues?
JPD
PS: For the curious: I want a "scratch" installation on the second
disk in order to try out new programs, drivers, settings, and such.
This problem with Drive Image is a good example of a benefit of using
a scratch installation. This being the first time I've tried Drive
Image, I'm glad I didn't let it jeopardize my painstakingly optimized
working installation of XP!

| If I understand you correctly you are trying to use the same disk to fetch
the image from and restore the image to, and I don't think that is allowed,
as the restore process wants to use info in the image file to alter the
partition table of the destination disk.
Move the image file from the secondary disk to the primary disk, then do the
restore to the secondary.

Target partition is the first primary partition on drive #2 and the image
file itself lies in the backup partition (either partition #2 or #3) of the
second disk, right?
When you boot XP #1 (disk #0, partition 1) make sure that the target
partition (first primary partition on drive #2) is not hidden... In
contradiction to Drive Image 2002, target partitions need to be
visible...same applies when doing a restore in the PQRE (recommended)...
Safer way to go about is do a restore when booting into the PQRE since a
system restore procedure is initiated!

| Thanks for the responses.
I tried simply reformatting Disk 2 and everything seems to be working
correctly now. I can boot into XP1 (first primary partition on Disk
1), save an image of XP1 to the second partition of Disk 2, and then
restore that image to the (targeted) first primary partition of Disk
2. So I now have XP1 on Disk 1, XP2 on Disk 2, and I can boot to
either one.
So, Drive Image 7 seems to be working successfully, although I haven't
yet tested it to restore XP1 to XP1 on Disk 1. I guess that will be
the acid test. *fingers crossed*
However, I realized just in time that my idea of using XP2 as a
"scratch" installation isn't as smart as I thought, because any image
from XP1 (C:\ on disk 1) that I restore to XP2 (F:\ on Disk 2) will be
full of registry items and other items that point to C:\! (Duh.)
So, I guess until I get this machine running they way I want it, I'll
be keeping parallel installations for a while -- in other words, XP2
will have its own clean installation (rather than creating from a
backup), and will have its own backup images.
Thanks again!
