A most elementary question

| A bit of wailing and self-pity first: I've inherited a very small task:
replace the 4 old backup tapes we're using with new ones. I'm guessing
this should take 5 minutes max. It is not going well. Our server runs
Veritas Backup Exec 8.6 under Win2000. The one employee who likely
understands it is neither accessible nor intelligible.
I'm new to the concept of "Media Sets," but was able to glean from the
help that in order to use tapes for scheduled backups, you must create a
media set to which said tapes must belong.
Ok, so: HOW?? I can create a new (empty) media set and give it a name;
but I see nothing about how to declare the new tapes a part thereof.
I would be consulting the documentation if we had any. Have found no
help in the help nor after much Googling. Please, can someone fill me
in this basic step? TIA E+100.

Although I am not familiar with Veritas, most backup packages work
basically the same way. You create the media sets, then you create
timed backup jobs. During the creation of the job, you pretty much
need to select three things, your source (files you want to back up),
your destination (the media set) and your schedule. So, attempt to
create a scheduled job, and look in the destination options and you
should see your media set in there somewhere.

| Hi Hal,
Actually just an hour ago I finally saw the way (or *a* way), and it
works, but of course is not documented anywhere.... I put the tape in
and told the PC to label it, then on the 'Devices' tab that tape shows
up as, yknow, addressable. Drag it into the new empty media set and
finally the backup procedure sees it and will use it.
Seems like a convoluted way to get it done, but it works (and I didn't
have to redefine the different backup jobs.
Thanks for posting.
