I can really recommend the program "drive snapshot" see: http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/intro.htm for more information.
it works only for win2k and upwards!
if you want to use it with your win9x version, you can use bartPE Cd (see http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ )
you can make an image of your harddrive to an other harddrive (usb, firewire, netdrive) during your regular win-session from within windows.
you can split images in individual amount of MB, e.g. 645 or 685 MB for CD.
it is easy to use. it is scriptable. it is unbelievable fast. it is cheap.it fits on a floppy disk. AND ... it works.
it is absolutely worth the money. i recommend it to all of my customers and use it on regular basis on workstations and servers.
check the trial-version first.
