I've tried saving a compressed image of my Linux drive (120Gb, of which
I've occupied only 8Gb so far) onto an 80Gb USB2 drive.

Using: "cat /dev/hdb | gzip > /mnt/sda2/linuximage.iso" the whole
operation took just over an hour.

I was surprised to find that the resultant image file was only 1.4Gb.

Does that seem a reasonable amount of compression, or should I suspect it
is somehow incomplete?
