Ghost 9.0 requires the .NET update as I understand it. It uses a
Windows service called "Shadow File Copy" (or similar name) which
allows imaging to occur while Windows is active/running.
Of course it's better not to have a bunch of applications running
while you're doing this, but I've successfully recovered a failed hard
drive myself (used Powerquest's Drive Image which is the product
Symantec bought and then renamed and updated it to Ghost 9.0)
I understand Acronis True Image uses the same technique and is the
other highly rated image backup software.
