I have a huge forum that i admin and currently im doing a full mysqldump of the database everynight/morning on the server and then pushing that to a NAS server via a samba share to do my backups. However this puts too much strain on the server dual 2.80GHz xeon and 2 gigs of ram- The main thing its putting usage on is disk i/o usage. SO the server CRAWLS during this time for an hour or so.. I was thinking of running another instance of mysql locally, running as a replication server and have its file location/path mounted to the samba share so there wouldnt be a huge backup at one time.. This just seems to fragile to me and samba puts a lot of load on of the actually kernel as well. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on what would to do here?
