I want to have another PC on my home LAN to use as server to run the
External 250 GB HD backup I used to backup 4 PCs running XP.
I have 4 PCs on my LAN and when they backup over LAN it bogs down the PC I
use, this is the same PC that interfaces (USB 2.0) to the External HD.

What is the cheapest way to get a server (or is there a simple device that
will act like a server) to interface from the ethernet (100 baseT) LAN to my
External USB HD backup?

I have a spare old laptop that would work, but I need USB 2.0 for the HD and
it doesnt have that.

Any thoughts or tips or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!

Maybe a Snap Appliance:
http://www.snapappliance.com/page.c...00main&nav=1100
250 GB in a plug-and-play. about $500,
speaks SMB/CIFS/HTTP/NFS and most other protocols. Multi-user, access
control and all that good stuff.
I have one right here, works like a charm, I love it.

Or: a lan-attached HD Ximeta NetDisk
http://www.ximeta.com/products/netw...disk/index.html

Can be shared via LAN (does NOT need tcp/ip)
Nice and convenient, both Ethernet and USB.
Dunno about pricing.

Both these will save you the headache of making your own pc-based server.

look at thiese products by linksys

http://www.linksys.com/products/gro...grid=35&scid=43

the storage link makes a NAS from usb 2 external drives

d-link also makes one but it's firmware is not ready for prime time yet

thanks. when reading the reviews on the Linksys it doesnt do well.
Problems stated were:
locks up frequently
wont power itself up power loss.
Uses proprietary disk format.
Have to lose any data on disk to format.
also then cant just hook disk up to PC anymore to get data off it cus of
different format.
wont format over a 80g HD
Seems about 50% were thumbs down....CNET etc.

Doesnt sound like its ready for prime time either. What do you think?

I set onw up for a friend and the only one of the issue below I have seen is
the proprietary format and not being able to plu the usb drive into windows
to use it -- that would be nice, but the drive are in some linux base file
system

I formatted to matrox 250g usb drive on the thing with no problems

it was on a UPS - so I so no issue with power

The dlink came back on after a power outage and it see NTFS drives and FAT32
drive, by you have no permission to create new root folders and the like

I was able to copy and read files from the dlink

thats good to know.
One major issue I have, and maybe its not an issue...

Is that I must be able to do image copies for entire disk restore.
I use Ghost 9.0 for that. If it has its own file format, will Ghost still
be able to store the image file and restore to a NTFS from the proprietary
format?

it looks like a network server file share to other PC and image software

I use acronis trueimage and set that up for my friend on the linksys with no
problem -- backups or restores

if you can boot a full bootable CD from acronis -- it sees the network on
the PC

I expect ghost would be similar - I used to use ghost 2003 and driveimage -
but gave them up for acronis trueimage

no had a problem

I backup five PC here at home - well 4 wired PC and a notebook across
wireless g -- probably would have to plug in a wire on the notebook for a
restore -- need to test that one

I have restore to spare harddrives in 3 of the wired machines as a test --
so I trust my recovery system
