Program for backing up only certain files on a regular basis?
|

| I have been using Stomp to back up some selected data files (all kinds
of extensions), for many years. But recently I've become concerned that
the program is not being maintained - there seems to be one by Stomp and
another by Sonic. I fear it is not wise to archive data with a
proprietary file format and a program that's not being maintained.
I use Ghost to backup to a USB drive and that works fine. But this is
an imaging program and I want to select the files.
I need a program which will backup files I select and create as a "job",
to one or two DVDs, on a regular basis. I don't want to have to select
each file everytime I want to backup, but rather to create a job which
knows to only do certain files.
Nero requires that you do a full backup. Stomp is unsupported.
Retrospect, Ghost and True Image are really imaging programs at heart.
Winzip using password protection would really be adequate but it is my
impression you can't save a job so that you can just tell it to go
backup the files in that "job".
Suggestions?
TIA

| We had the same issue as you and even used to use Stomp. We now use
Backup Genie 5 and back up to cd-rw and/or DVD+RW. Works well. I have an
external USB2 250GB drive and create an Image with True Image Pro when I
want to backup the whole drive.

Thanks - looks interesting. Do you know about the "proprietary-ness" of
the backup files? In other words, five years down the road when I want
to restore some files, will anything be able to read them?
That's one of my big concerns with Stomp. Why did you stop using Stomp?

I use Ghost 9 for Images but for daily incremental backup of my data
I use a free program called EZ-Back-It-Up to back up my documents, e-mail messages etc. It is non
proprietory, can be scheduled to run automatically and writes to CD, DVD etc. I've been using it for over a
year with great success!
It's available here http://www.rdcomp.net/ezbackitup/index.php

Genie Backup Manager 5 can store backups as self-executables,
eliminating the need for the software for restores altogether. It is
an excellent package. I have been using it for a couple of years now.
I no longer fear re-formats. HTH.

| We stopped using it as they had an issue when the disk was full...or
near full. They never did support the Liteon 52X burners!
I believe that you can change the extension in Genie backup files and a
ZIP will open it!

Louise,
Try out Argentum Backup 2.5:
http://www.argentuma.com/backup.html
http://www.argentuma.com/ab.exe (1 MB)
It's a backup tool to easily back up your documents and folders.
You can point it to whatever files and folders on your computer, as
opposed to drive
mirroring software.
Only $ 25 for a licensed copy.
Best of luck.
