backup files/folders to hd in dvd-size chunks?
|
|
|
| I'm looking for SOHO backup software that can do the following...
- Select files and folders from multiple drives.
- Backup to a hard drive.
- Have a setting for the target backup file(s) to split them into
specific sizes (predefined or custom bytes).
I don't like the fact that most backup software that I've seen that can
backup to dvd requires you to swap the dvds during the backup process.
I would much rather prefer running the backup nightly while I sleep,
with the dvd-size backup file chuks being written to a staging area on a
hard drive. Then I can burn the backup file splits to individual dvds
at my leisure.
My goal is to be able to restore a single file from those dvds, without
having to copy each dvd back to the hard drive. It would work to backup
to a single huge bak file on the hard drive, then split the huge file
with a file-splitting program, then burn the chunks, but if I did that,
any restore would first require that the dvd chunks be merged back into
the huge file.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

| Hi Gary,
Backup Exec 10d will allow you to do what your asking. Its simple and easy
to use. It will allow you to backup directly to a DVD (Removable Media), or
backup to a HDD, or Both. You can specify the size of the backup files you
want created when you set up the disk target folder for staging. You can
then also run scheduled job that archives (moves) the data off the HDD to a
DVD in a staging approach like you mentioned. You can download an evaluation
copy from http://www.backupexec.com, and use it for 60 days for free. Give
it a try. I think it will meet your needs.
Thanks
Nick

| Thanks for the reply. We use Veritas 9.1 at the company I work for, and
if 10d is anything like 9.1, it's a bit of overkill for my needs...and
probably way too expensive as well. :-)
I've downloaded the trial version of Acronis True Image 9, and a quick
test has shown that you can split the backup file to a predefined size
(4.7gb, 700mb, etc.), even when the target device is a hard drive. This
would work for me, but I'm still evaluating the usage and interface of
the program. I also don't really need the imaging piece of the program,
because I'm a proponent of reinstalling Windows from scratch, as long as
my data files are backed up, and my data drive is pretty big...probably
too big to keep multiple images around.
I own Nero 6, so I'm going to see what Nero 7 looks like, especially the
new version of BackItUp.
Thanks again.

I am not aware of a software that can do what you are asking for.
But be you can write a script to do "bin packing".
Googling "bin packing" and I have found such a script.
http://www.idt.mdh.se/kpt/Homepage/source/binpack
You may want to modify it to suit your needs.
