Hi,

I am going to need to replace my hard drive in a Windows XP-based laptop (back it
up, send it away, get a new one). Right now, I only backup important files by
burning them to CD locally, but I don't want to do that for the whole drive.

What I would like to do is to create an image of the HD on my desktop machine which
is on the network with the laptop (this is easy with any of the backup software, I
presume), put the new, blank HD in and then restore from the image onto new drive.

Does any of the backup packages provide such functionality? Since there is not going
to be an OS on the laptop, how will the network be established? It's a wireless
network, but I could also just use a cross-over ethernet cable, if that makes things
simpler.

Thanks,

Iggy

burn the image to the CD of the laptop then use the emergency
recovery floppy/CD to get the image off the laptops CD and back
to the new hard drive. the emergency CD/floppy will have the DOS
drivers for the CD and probably the hard disk utlities to
partition & format it. do not fool with a network transfer.
