Hey Fellas

I've just received 20 AIT Sony tapes from our head office. We're using a
robotic 20 slot robotic backup system and since I'm relatively newbie to
both (about 1yr with limited interaction), I thought I'd pose this question
here.

What does one do when you have a brand new tape? I stuck the tapes into the
slots and inventoried them and the following error message came back
(emailed to me):

Server: "xxx") (Job: "Inventory Library 00095") Warning - Media statistics
have been lost some time in the past. Robotic Library: SPECTRA 1

Drive: SONY 1

Slot: 1

I was told that I would need to label the media first, but when I tried
doing so, the "Label Media" option is greyed out. I made sure that there
are no active jobs.

I also noticed that the Backup Exec 10.0 would automatically label the media
after finishing backing up to a tape.

1) HOW DO I MANUALLY LABEL THE TAPE MEDIA?

2) IF I WERE TO FIND OUT HOW TO MANUALLY LABEL A MEDIA, WOULD RE-LABELLING
MY OLDER TAPES BE OF ANY CONSEQUENCE TO THE DATA ALREADY BACKED UP IN THEM?

You should be able to put them into the loader through an import and then
inventory them. Once that is done you can right click on each slot and the
label option should be available. Be careful when you label them because it
has to write to the tape, and doing so can and probably will overwrite the
data on the tape.

If you go to the media tab and rename the label that BE has applied to the
media, the next backup will apply that label at backup time. This isn't
immediate and could confuse you should you take the media out before the
next backup occurs and then inventory it on another system.

Hope that helps.
