Author application or service?

It says that "Cobian Backup" can run as "application or service". What
exactly does this mean? Obviously I know what an application is. But what is
a service, and what is the advantage? Thanks.

If program is runned in a service mode then it makes no difference what
user is logged in or even no user is logged in.
