Something that works - FWIW

| I came home from vacation recently and found my PC had crashed and I could
not reboot. I turned it off overnight and it booted OK the next morning. I
decided it was time to get a reliable backup/restore program. I have been
testing and what I have found works good for me is using Snapshot -
http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/ to back up the C partition and Acronis TI
for the rest of drive 0 partitions. Acronis TI boot from CD is too slow with
my MB - I'm sure just because their implementation of Linux does not support
USB2 on my MB (estimate is 9 hours). I have 6 partitions - on the system
drive (drive 0). I use SnapShot running under BartPE restore C: partition -
reboot to WinXP SP2 on the C: partition - and reinstall the other 5
partitions. Total time for all - 27GB total - 36 minutes. Did under real
world conditions - backup images stored to a Maxtor USB 200 GB drive and
booted from BartPE restoring to an unformatted 129 GB drive. Snapshot
doesn't restore a full disk - only 1 partition at a time. Its a trade off -
but definately a quick and simple process for me as I have spent 1 day plus
reinstalling from scratch. Its a shame that 1 program couldn't accomplish
this easily. I think Acronis TI9 could be the answer for an all in one if it
could run under BartPE which has most all USB2 drivers - BartPE is also
bootable from a "Thumb" drive (with some work).Hopefully Acronis will
release a BartPE solution soon.

Acronis TrueImage 8 has had BartPE plugin already.
Though TrueImage 9, last time I read their website a couple of months
ago, has not.
UBCD4Win (Ultimate Boot CD for Windows) is based on BartPE, with lot
of drivers and goodies added. I have a UBCD4Win CD with TrueImage8
plugin added. Works very well for me.

| As it turns out I had an email this morning from Acronis giving me the link
to the BartPE/UBCD4Win plugin (TI8). Don't know why they don't give it out
to all registered users of V8 or V9 as a standard download. Anyway, I built
a new BartPE CD and it ran like a champ. Took under 17 minutes to restore to
a clean test drive - 27GB - 5 partitions. I used the BartPE only version to
do a clean test - will install on UBCD4 tomorrow and give it a run.

From the users' perspective, I agree with you that Acronis should
include the TrueImage plugin in the program package.
From Acronis' perspective, they may "hide" this plugin for some
reasons, which I have no way to know except guessing.
1. Building a BartPE bootable CD requires some technical skills.
For example, one of the pre-requsites is getting SP2 splistreamed
onto the XP Pro CD. It's no big deal to many users; but it
would be a tecnical support burden to Acronis.
2. Not everyone needs the TrueImafe plugin. Many users have no problem
booting up their PC'es with the Acronis bootable CD (Linux based).
3. It looks bad on Acronis herself that BartPE CD's (or other variants
like UBCD4Win) boot OK while their Linux based bootable CD's fail
to boot in some users' PC'es.
4. I'm not sure Acronis will be responsible for any legal issues
associated if she encourages her users building PartPE CDs, which
are created using Microsoft's OS CD's.

Yeah, I agree - having to support the plugin also could be a nightmare.

I would not have pursued other means if I had been able to be able to use
the Acronis
bootable CD.

Well they chose their specialty. I started working with disk operating
systems and hard disk before the IBM PC - my 1st one was a 10 MB 14" drive
that took almost a minute to come "ready". Point being that of all
products - disk backup programs - has got to be as tough as it comes when
regular consumers are a big customer. I don't see this situation changing
because of the prethoria of different MBs out there. However, even with
Windows issues - more support for BPE and UBCD4Win may be a good road to go
as they will always support more drivers and MBs than Linux.
I've decided a good road will be to use to both Acronis and Snapshot - you
gotta like Snapshot as it is so simple. And as it worked in a real life test
out of the box its got my respect. So I'll probally use TI scheduled backups
and use Snapshot every couple of weeks or so.
