Is there any method to make multi volume compressed files in Linux ?

I have abt 80 GB of critical material in abt 1000 directories and want
to pack it weekly. I have another HD for the that. Besides I want to
make copies of backups to other PCs in our LAN.
Linux ZIP has a 2 GB barrier. I tried to write a script for that but it
seems that I don't have time for it.

I would like to have a tool to make about 600MB compressed files so that
I could make CDs of them every now and then.

The finest system might make one native backup in xxxMB chunks and then
once a week an incremental one still in xxxMB chunks.
