Two weeks ago I bought a Dell Dimension 4700 (Windows XP SR-2) with a
Philips +- RW DVD drive (DVD 8631). I tried for a week to back up my hard
drive to a DVD +RW disc using Stomp BackUp My PC.

When the software attempted to write to a +RW disc in the drive, I got the
following error message:

"The current drive is unavailable. It may be in use by another application
or shared as a system device. To continue, try shutting down the other
applications."

Occasionally I got a message instructing me to put a blank disc in the
drive, even though there was a blank disc in the drive.

I downloaded and installed the firmware upgrade for the DVD drive from the
Dell website, but the results were the same. I tried running the software in
Safe mode, but again the results were the same. I thought the problem could
be related to the Imation DVD +RW media, so I bought some Sony DVD +RW
media, but the results were the same.

I finally decided to uninstall the Roxio Drag-to-Disc software to see if
this was causing a conflict with BackUp My PC, and the backup software now
runs without incident.

I would like to use the Roxio Drag-to-Disc feature again, but I need to
resolve the conflict with my backup software first.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do that?

Cordially,

Jerry

Greg,

You should be able to turn off the Drag-to-Disk temporarily do do your
backups without "uninstalling" it. Then turn it back on when your not
backing up. Or maybe install both burners and assign one to drag-to-disk and
use the other for backups ...

Good Luck,

I had to deinstall Roxio Drag'nDrop to get it to work properly although some
have said it should have worked by just disabling the program. I have no
need for Drag'nDrop so it worked for me... YMMV.
