| Looked at various boxes that house HDD, connecting via USB &/or Firewire.
Occurs to me - quite some trouble just to get outboard storage,
needing a seperate power supply and all.
So I'm thinking - what about using a spare IDE connection within
my computer, and a 2 pole power switch, so it's only switched on
at backup time. That'd provide some protection - yes?
Would it be OK to leave the ribbon cable connected?
Any no-no's?

Most people don't have a spare IDE connector.

It is likely to ruin either your PC or the drive --or both-- if
you accidentaly toggle the switch while the PC is running.

mmmm....

It is certainly not advisable.

| Check this out. Works well for me. I clone the first drive to the
second for backup. I also run Second Copy software to keep the second
drive up to date for important files.

| Thank for the advices fellas.
George's suggestion is interesting, but has both drives connected at all
times - not as safe? (I'm thinking to only switch in the backup drive as
needed).
Gerard - can you please explain why leaving the ribbon cable connected
isn't a good idea? I thought it would be "dead" with the power cable
switched out?

You supply a bunch of active input signals to electronic parts
while they are not powered.
That's a situation that should be avoided according to
manufacturer databooks.

about before this.
Thanks

From Philips' IC04 book (1995 edition) pg 25.
Actually, I don't think you can find any databook that says
otherwise.
(Although some will not print this information anymore as it is
common knowledge to anyone handling electronic devices :-)

Thanks Gerard.
I can drop this idea now - not worth trying to get around that one.
