Hello ppl,

I need help by some kind of expert to find the best solution to backup a
network of servers and workstation with different O.S.

At the moment we are backing our servers and workstations up on a weekly
basis by using DVD recorders and DATS on the local machines.
Being this now impossible to handle anymore, we are in the process of
changing our backup method into a more decent and modern system.

We would now like to:
STEP1. Backup the full images of a certain number of servers and workstation
(see below) INTO the HardDrive of a "Backup workstation" through our 1GBit
network
STEP2. Backup our "Backup workstation" entirely or partially INTO a 160gbite
DAT

We need to :
-Make FULL ONLINE NETWORK(TCP/IP 1gbit) BACKUP IMAGES of all the following
servers and workstations.
-Have the possibility to extract and restore single files and directories
from the full backup images.
-Have the possibility to make incremental Backups of the images.

Systems to make full backup images of:
DOMAIN SERVER [W2000 SERVER O.S.]
E-MAIL WORKSTATION [WXP PRO O.S.]
ORACLE DB WORKSTATION [WXP PRO O.S.]
PROD. WORKSTATION 1 [WXP PRO O.S.]
PROD. WORKSTATION 2 [WXP PRO O.S.]
CUSTOMERS DB SERVER [LINUX O.S.]

Workstation that would receive the full images of the above-described
systems and would back everything up INTO a 160gb DAT:
BACKUP WORKSTATION [WXP PRO O.S.] with QUANTUM Value
DLTape(tm) DLT VS160 Drive ONBOARD

I have been suggested to buy ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 8.0, BUT IT'S UNCLEAR TO ME
IF:
A. THIS SOFTWARE CAN REALLY COVER ALL OUR NEEDS
B. WHICH VERSIONS OF THE SOFTWARE I WOULD HAVE TO BUY

Which manufacterer builds 160 GB DAT-drives? Is this native or with
2.6x datacompression?

I like TI but have nevr used itto back up production servers or a
multisystem site like yours. The server version may have the features
needed and you should look at it.

Veritas and Arcserve are the two big names in Microsoft-centric
network backup. I'm familiar with Veritas as-of a couple years ago,
arcserve almost 10 years ago. I know Veritas could backup up unix
boxes when I used it.

You need to plan your backup and recovery strategy for your big
applications. I see Oracle on your list. Veritas sells a "plug-in"
that knows how to backup an oracle DB. there are other ways to do it.

Most shops set their desktops up to store all user data on the file
servers and then just backup the servers.

I liked Veritas.

TI is an image backup tool. A network like yours typically depends
on file backup systems, with some sort of crash recovery procedure
to recreate failed disks.

If you have any software RAID on your systems you have a whole other
set of issues with crash recovery.

I am not sure but it should be FREECOM . And it is SCSI. I think
native...but I have still to test it...

You can try the Linbox Rescue Server. http://www.linbox.com

Each module allows you to achieve daily as well as rare tasks :
- disk image generation to be stored on a hard disk or bootable DVD (can make
perfect disk images of Linux (EXT2, Reiserfs, XFS, ...) and Windows systems)
- data backup and restoration, where files are spooled in the server's hard disk
(files are compressed and duplicate files are not stored twice)
- remote PC access
- software and hardware asset management

You'll find a demo ISO on their site.

Now they even have a GPL version of the LRS, where the disk image generation
works only for free OSes. http://lrs.linbox.org
