| Hi All,
I'm looking for a backup software tha allows me to:
1) perform backups of files dated since day X;
2) uses a popular file format, not proprietary.
Since I'm asking, can anyone possibly explain me in plain English the
diference between Incremental and Diferential backups? (I swear I've
read the help files of more than one program explaining this, but I
did not thing the explanations were writen in plain layman English,
sorry.)
TIA,
Jose B. Ruivo

PS - 3) That it allows me to chose extracting only selected files, to
their original paths, or to diferent locations.
Thanks,
BigBen

PS2 - For the time being, WinRAR seems to do the job very nicelly!

| As I understand it the difference is this:
An incremental backup stores all files modified since the last backup. The
modified dates have changed but the content may not have.
A differential backup stores all files that have actually changed their
content since the last backup.

You would see the difference after the 2nd backup:
Incremental:
Backup 1) Do Full Backup
Backup 2) Do Incremental Backup. This backup contains all files
changed since Backup 1.
Backup 3) Do next incremental backup. This backup contains all files
changed since Backup 2.
Backup 4) Do next incremental backup. This backup contains all files
changed since Backup 3.
.... and so on ...
Differential:
Backup 1) Do Full Backup
Backup 2) Do differential backup. This backup contains all files
changed since Backup 1.
Backup 3) Do differential backup. This backup contains all files
changed since Backup 1.
Backup 4) Do differential backup. This backup contains all files
changed since Backup 1.
.... and so on ...
Incremental has the advantage that the incrementals are smaller and
thus faster to complete. The drawback is that if you need to do
disaster recovery you must restore every single backup since the full
backup.
Differential backups are larger than incrementals and thus take longer
to complete but if you have to do disaster recovery you only need to
restore the full backup and the most recent differential.

I suggest you visit nonags.com and check out their backup/compression
section.
Many of the programs (all free) use zip compression.
