What is the best Dantz version for a win98 machine with a 20gig hd.
I looked at 7.0 and it is a resource HOG!!!
I want something lightweight that works well for disaster recovery and
will write to cd-rw drives for image backup. Thanks for any useful
information.

retrospect does not do image backup.

cd-rw is a poor choice for a backup medium, use either external hard drives
or, ugh!, tape.

Ok, then r u saying it will not do disaster recovery backups, i.e.-
restore of bootable OS to cdrw? I agree that cd-rw is a flaky choice,
but my computer only has a usb 1.1 and others have had to upgrade their
bios to get 2.0 cards to work. Also I have several older machines that
do not have usb capability. What would u suggest?

The best you can do is find some software that enables the creation of a
bootable CD.
Using the bootable CD, you would then restore your date from your backp
media.

For a 20GB system, you could get by with, ugh! tapes.

The overhead with newer software likely will cause problems with Win 98
systems

Acronis True Image does do image backup. but if you have only CD-RW as a
backup device, u need a bunch of CD-RW to fully back up your system.

At some point, one has to stop using older systems.

Depending on how you are using them, it might be most cost effective to
replace the computers. Perhaps 1 new computer could replace several older
systems.

Dantz supposedly is used for total system backup, so I do not know
what you mean when you say it cannot do image backup. R U saying that
it only backs up with regular file backups or what?

I disagree that I need new equipment. I have an 800 MHZ system and
that is plenty fast enough for my purposes. Also the cd-rw
unreliability cuts across systems. Even the latest systems have
problems. It is more a function of lousy software, incompatible
standards than anything to do with hardware inadequacies. True Image
has ALOT of complaints about it, just google TI and problems. At the
risk of being repetitive there really is no really GOOD backup
software that I have found; I have searched thoroughly. They all have
major problems.

Actually I could use the 1.1 interface to backup to another HD, but
it would be somewhat slow. The problem is not with system hardware
inadquacy, it is more with my own lack of knowledge about hard drive
geometry and programming. Were I a programmer, I could and new alot
about hard disk functions, I probably could write my own program and
wouldn't be here asking for help. I really need to study up on hard
drives, the boot process, partitioning,etc.

You can buy a PCI card with USB 2.0 external ports very reasonably.
