Backup Speed Issue - Test Results

| Hi all
Following my recent post "Ridiculous increase in backup time", I have tried
the following with no success:
Re-creating the backup job from scratch
Re-booting both servers
Re-ordering the job priorities to shift the backup time of slow partition
Defragging the slow to backup partition
So to re-cap:
2 servers, Server 1 file and print, Server 2 Exchange 2003 and ISA
server/internet gateway
Backup device is Sony AIT3 fitted in Server 1.
Operating systems both Win2003 server.
Backup software Veritas Backup Exec V9.1
Backup Rates:
Server 1 - c:\ system partition 4.2Gb 848Mb/min
d:\ data-apps partition 31.5 Gb 669Mb/min
Server 2 - c:\ system partition 2.4Gb 745Mb/min
********d:\data-apps partition 10.6Gb 24.9Mb/min******** (defragged)
This last partition includes exchange database files priv1.edb 2.4Gb and
pub1.edb 6.9Gb.
All verify operations appear to occur at speed of 700Mb/min plus.
So the question is - Why is the exchange partition taking such a ridiculous
time to backup?
TIA
Phil

Did you try stopping the exchange server app while you backup?

Thanks for response Bob.
Would this be something to try during testing, or is this something that is
regularly automated to avoid conflicts during backup.
Our backup occurs overnight, so making it a manual operation would be
inconvenient.

For starters, do this as an experiment -- to see if exchange is causing
the slowdown.

| Thanks for your time, Bob
The fault seems to have been located as ridiculous volume of mail in the Bad
Mail folder in Exchange.
We deal regularly with: middle east, China, former Russian countries etc.
As a result I believe that our spam and junk mail message levels are
probably higher than most!
Backup time was reduced last night from 10.5 hrs to 3-3/4 hrs!
Thanks again
Phil
