I have the opportunity to replace all 23 copies of Arcserve 11 with
whatever I choose. I am using Open File Agents, SQL Agents, Exchange
Agents, and remote backup agents. I have worked with Backup Exec and I
prefer it over Arcserve but I have been reading posts by many people
who prefer Retrospect over both. I would like to hear opinions on
which way to go. I am looking for the most trouble free product with
the highest reliability. To be fair, I have never had a problem
restoring files from Arcserve, but I do see a lot of jobs that crash
and need to be manually restarted. In general Backup Exec is more
reliable from my experiece with it, it just seems to work. Is
Retrospect that much better?

Unless recent versions of Backup Exec have changed, they are using a very
outdated backup file format.

I started using Retrospect about 2 years ago and have found it far superior
to the latest version of BUMP that I used. As I recall, I last used BUMP
4.85 or something like that.

Retrospect's performance leaves something to be desired.
It took about twice as long as BUMP to do a backup and compare of the full
system.

I am currently using Retrospect 6.5.

I've heard good things about Acronis' True Image and might give that a try.

There are things I do not like about Retrospect, but then there's things I
do not like about True Image.

As a curmudgeon, I doubt tat any software would fullt satisfy me.

It is a long long time since I last used Arcserve, so no comment from
me on that.
But if you can get any software you want for 23 servers I wouldn't
take Veritas BackupExec but Veritas Netbackup Enterprise (or TSM or
even Legato)

But all depends on your needs, and except for the number of servers
and SQL and Exchange you don't say much about your installation.
