We run full network backups every 2 days or so: our backup size is
app. 1200G and takes 40+ hours, so fully daily network backups are not
possible. My managers have been looking at our backup strategy and
I've been tasked with making the change as well as researching
enterprise-level backup software. I'm new to the company and only an
ad hoc SA (so please pardon any ignorance on my part-some of this is
very new to me)

Current set up:
Windows 2000 SP4
Dell Powervault 122T with SDLT 320 Autoloader
Microsoft Windows Backup Version 5.0, NT Tape Backup Utility

Our Network Backup is run as a scheduled task that accesses cmd files
written by the former SA (who is no longer here, left no documentation,
and doesn't want to be contacted by anyone at this company)

For changing normal backups to differentials, is it as simple as
changing the current script so that /M normal becomes /M differential?
copy of relevant script:
ntbackup backup systemstate C: D: E: F: L: M: \\srdc01\c$ \\srdc01\d$
/J "Daily Network Backup - %dstamp%" /P "DLT" /N "Daily Backup Tape -
%dstamp%" /D "Daily Network Backup - %dstamp%" /V:yes /L:S /M normal
/RS:yes /HC:on

What needs to be done in regards to the tape drive? How to get the
diff backups to run to each tape in turn?

For researching backup software, I'd like to download Veritas Exec
for the free trial run-does anyone have any experience with this? I
will need to cover 2 SQL servers, 1 Exchange, 2 Domain Controllers and
a few other servers. Workstations will not be included in this backup.

Any suggestions to mitigate my glaring inexperience would be hugely
welcome. Thank you!

Tivoli Storage Manager is THE enterprise backup solution. However, it may be
a bit pricey and cause your company to have to beef up the backup hardware
to really get full use out of it, but you should definitely check it out.
Veritas may be your solution for the small setup described below.

Actually, DataMills' Relative Rev Backup does backup open files such
as Word/Excel documents, making sure they are coherent. This is a basic
feature built in with the software.

Files that are opened exclusively by any application are skipped,
unless an Open File Module is installed.

System Files that are opened exclusively are backed up with the System
State automation feature.
