| I backed up using NG2003 to a USB external hardrive. To restore, my
plan was to boot up to NG2003 with a bootable CD, and then restore from
the USB external HD, but I could never get a bootable CD. Can anyone
provide instructions to do this? Thanks in advance.

Is the laptop set up to allow booting from a CD?
Check the BIOS and make sure that you can boot from a CD.

Download ISOBuster from http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster
and check whethe the CD is really bootable.
Does not Ghost 2003 offer a means to create a bootable CD?
If so, try again, sumptin may have gone wrong before, or CD has a bad spot,
or ...

There's an interative tutorial in Ghost 2003 that explains exactly how to do
it. Instead of RTFM, you might try to WTFT, as in Watch The Fine Tutorial.

A floppy is made bootable by putting the system files for your system on
the floppy. I suppose if you put those same files on a cd it would
become bootable. And make sure that the CD drive is in the boot sequence.

No. It is slightly more complicated, both for a floppy and a CD.
You cannot make them bootable, just by copiing the bootfiles onto
the media.
For a floppy, format them with the command
FORMAT A: /s
or run SYS A: on a formatted disk.
For a CD: make sure you have a boot-image available and instruct
your burner program to create a bootable CD.

| I have tried with several CD burners that I have. Do you know one that
will produce a bootable CD?

The drive has little to do with creating a bootable CD.
It is software that makes a CD bootable.
Download ISOBuster from http://www.smart-projects.net/cdrecovery.php to
determine whether the media is bootable.
Can you boot using CDs fom other products, such as Windows?
Does Ghost 2003 have an option to create a bootable CD?
If so, try again, the media may just be bad.
