I need to buy some backup software (prefer disk imaging type) for my new
computer. The computer is a dual core 975 chip running Windows XP sp2.

Ghost 2003 is creating new partitions and I loose all my data/programs
when I try to image the disk. Anyone know of a fix for this ? My old
machine was a Microsoft D/L upgrade to sp2 from their web site and
worked fine with Ghost 2003.

The software needs to meet the following criteria:

Must work with XP sp2 and NTFS file system

Must backup to DVD

Imaging software preferred

The backups must be either self booting or have a separate boot disk for
restoring.

Must be relatively fast. If possible I would like something with speeds
similar to Ghost 2003. 10 gig with Ghost 2003 takes about 45 minutes to
image and verify - restore takes about 30 minutes. This was on my old
machine, I hope the new machine will be the same or faster.

Thanks

Ted;

Acronis True Image Workstation 9.1 might meet your criteria:

http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/products/ATICW/

I have only had the program for a couple of weeks, but it seems much faster
than Ghost 2003, at least in backing up and restoring partition images to
hard drives using its own boot CD. I like ability to verify that an image is
not corrupted, as I recently started having real problems with corrupted (or
at least nonfunctional) Ghost 2003 images.

Still haven't tried the backup to DVD-R feature.

So far as I can tell, it's a quality product.

Ted shuffled out of his cave and grunted these great (and sometimes not
so great) words of knowledge:

I don't know about TI 9.1, however, TI 10 is VERY fussy about the dvd it
will accept. I went through 20 brand new dvd before it found a couple
that it liked. I also found the program to be quite slow. The image
creation wasn't bad - 10 gig imaged and verified in about 45 minutes.
The sloooow is on the restore. After getting the boot disk to recognize
the dvd in the drive, I let it run for about 5 minutes and it was still
saying about 3 1/2 hours !!! My machine is a 3.0 (Candlewood processor
) with 1 gig of 3200 ddr400 ram.

I figured out how to use Ghost 2003 to backup, restore and verify on XP
sp2 without it screwing up the HD.

I tried backing up a basic ~3GB XP Pro SP2 install to DVD-R, then verifying
and restoring. Each of these operations took under 15 minutes, on an old
Athlon XP 1800 system.

TI Workstation is one of the Acronis "corporate" products, and 9.1 is the
current version.

Maybe your Acronis program doesn't like your DVD burner.
