When I was using WinME and Win98 I was able to copy my boot partition to
another drive (as backup) and if my PC got screwed up I just went back to
the backed up partition. I would either boot directly from the back up or I
would copy the backup over the corrupted partition. I used simple tools
like Ranish Partition Manager and Norton Ghose 5.1c (1999). I was using
WinME and Win98.

Now I have WinXP and also the partition sizes are getting too big and I'm
running into problems. I can't just swap things around any more. In
particular, WinXP has some inner workings that don't like what I'm trying to
do. I think NTFS is not amenable to it. I don't understand the finer
points of NTFS. I am a whiz at tinkering with the MBR and dual booting with
the older stuff.

I am a very hands-on kind of guy. I have no problem using DOS based, text
based interfaces. I don't require much. I only back up the boot partition
with the OS and programs so I can get back in the saddle when I need to. I
read about Ghost 9 and Ghost10 and they sound like they have way more
capabilities than I need or want. They sound also complicated, tempermental
and expensive to use. Probably they are bloated software that gets in your
face too.

I don't need much. I just need to save the boot partition to another drive
and then copy it back to the place where it came from when the system gets
broken. If I can do it by booting with a floppy that's much to be preferred
in my view.

Norton Ghost 9 and 10 look very unattractive to me. Can anyone here tell me
a simple way to do what I want to do ? What programs do I need ?

Your help will be very much appreciated.

TIA. Bill S.

As long as you're not using XP SP2, Ghost 2003 will do exactly what
you want with a minimum of problems. Using it with SP2 involves
creating a diskette with Win 98. See instructions here:

I tried 10 and hated it. I now use True Image and while not perfect,
it is pretty close to meeeting all my needs.

Thanks Chuck. I was reading your other posts on the subject. I still have
my Win98SE and WinME cds around here. In fact I have a WinME machine up and
running. It may be a week before I get working on this.

Thanks again.
