Hi All
With my recently resurgent interest in computing, I would like to attempt to
format the hard drive of my old PC and re-install everything, but before I
do, I would also like to back up everything and store it on my new PC or CDs
in case I can't get the old one to work properly, so that I can go back to
the old PC's current state. What software can do the job? This might be
slightly off the topic, but can I also scan the old PC for viruses remotely
by connecting my new PC to it and using the virus software on my new PC?
Cheers, George

If you network OldPC to NewPC, then using NewPC to virus-scan OldPC is simple:
on OldPC, share the HD; on NewPC, use Explorer to create a net.mapped drive
to that shared HD and then fire up your AV app and point it to the mapped drive.

{I'm not sure that all AV apps support scanning mapped drives, but all three
that I have at hand do. And IIRC, the other two AV apps that I use also do.
Don't ask why I use five different AV apps - my tech-life is kinda messy.}

It is easy to copy all of your data files to a folder on NewPC once those PCs
are networked -- assuming that you know where all of your data files are on
OldPC. {I mostly keep my data on a separate Data partition. On many PCs, data
is scattered all over the place; many WinDuhs apps default to storing their
data in the folder with the app, or in some non-obvious location.}

Backing up everything requires a real backup app. And remember that what you
backup with one app probably cannot be restored by any other app; particularly
if you backup under Win9x and want to restore under any NT-based OS.
