Looking for a backup packsge.

|
| I am loking for a backup package with very specific properties. I find
that I lose a lot of work, not by outright hardware failure, but because of
the way I work. I may delete or trash a page and not discover it until
later. I also want to have the backup as a direct copy of what I am doing
so I can easily search and work with the backup just as I would the source.
I've got a "One Touch" external disk. I figure that is sufficiently
independent of the computer to make a dependable backup media..
The package should be based on a mirror backup approach so that I can
play directly with the backed up files. It should run in the background.
As soon as it sees a file change it should transfer it to the external disk.
I'm thinking that a maximum thirty minute delay would be desirable.
Although once a day might be acceptable. It should start by transferring
everything (about three or four GB) to the backup media. Then it should
switch to transferring only things that have changed . It should keep all
backup versions on the backup media for an adjustable period of time. Once
started it should be designed to run continually.

Second Copy 2000 does that, as long as you're writing to a network share
or external hard drive. It's a simple mirroring solution with the
ability to configure how many previous revisions you want to keep. For
example:
C:\Dev
Gets backed up to F:\Latest\Dev (which is the most recent copy of any
files in C:\Dev) with older revisions written to F:\Older\Dev. I set it
to run every 4 hours and keep up to 8 older revisions (along with
deleted files).
But for a long-term solution, you really need to look into source code
management software (SubVersion, CVS, Visual SourceSafe, BitKeeper,
etc.).

| Hi Don,
AJC Active Backup is exactly what you need:
http://www.ajcsoft.com/AJCActBk.php
Have you ever experienced that horrible sinking feeling when you realize you
have lost some work ? Maybe you deleted a file, over wrote it with another
file or it has been corrupted etc. This can be very costly in terms of time
and money and in the worst cases can land you in deep trouble.
Now you can make this problem a thing of the past with AJC Active Backup.
AJC Active Backup monitors the files you change on your PC and then
automatically and silently backs them up into a compact archive. You decide
which folders and file types are backed up.
The archive stores multiple revisions of each file you edit. Think of it as
a revision control system for your hard disk. This means you can get back
any version of a file giving you unlimited undo capabilities and also you
have a complete record of what you have been doing. It also has the built
in capability to show you a comparison of your files so you can see what has
changed.
There is very little extra load on your PC due to the way it operates in the
background. You just see a subtle indicator in the Windows taskbar status
area. The backup archives are generally very small because they are
compressed and only the changes to each file are stored each time a new
revision is added. There is an automatic purge facility to save you disk
space by stopping the archives from growing too large.
Even if you have a centralized revision control system and do regular
backups AJC Active Backup is of great value because it backs up every time
you save a file without you having to think about it. Your archive is
always up to date whereas your other backups may be hours or days out of
date.
AJC Active Backup is a must for any serious PC user who values their work.
To name but a few, programmers, web designers, documenters would benefit
from this. I can honestly say it has saved me from trouble on several
occasions !
