| We recently had a problem with Backup Exec not starting. We run
version 10.0 Rev 5520. I am writing this up so if anyone else has this
problem, maybe a dejanews search will bring this up and save them time
.
Anyways, we recently rebooted the server, and BUE didn't start - the
BUEServer Service would Start, but then immeidately stop. In the event
viewer Application log, we got the following:
Source: Backup Exec
Category: (65535)
Event ID: 57802
Description: The Backup Exec Server Service did not start. An internal
error (-536837661) occurred in object 11.
Now we did some poking around, and Veritas has some article up on their
site relating to this error. However, none of the recommendations we
tried worked. What we ended up doing (and you won't need to go through
this) was moving files around to try to see if there was a corrupt
file. It turns out that the service would start fine until we moved
the file "msgq0000000000.dat" from our corrupt copy of the Veritas
directory into the clean one - once that corrupt file was put into
place, the problem occurred. We even did it on another server and it
consistently failed with that error. Once we replaced that with a
"clean" copy of the file, BUE launched normally.
So, the quick & simple of our resolution is: If you see the above
event showing up in your log and can't get backup Exec to Start, delete
that file from the path (or rename it) - the path to the file is {your
drive letter here}:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\NT\Data. While I
wasn't a part of the entire troubleshooting process, this step did the
trick for us!
Hopefully this helps save someone all the time we spent on drivers,
permissions, repairing the installation, etc. Please drop me a line if
you found this helpful!
