| Bill,
I used Kawecki's trick (boot to Win 98 floppy and then type fdisk/mbr) This
activated the cloned drive so that it could boot. Everything seemed to work
except Norton Anti-virus. I got a message saying they wanted money to
activate the software on this drive. I can live with that.

Great! Glad it worked. Interesting as to why it works, isn't it?
The NT/2000/XP boot code is 440 bytes, while the Win98 boot code is 446
bytes. The Win98 "fdisk /mbr" command will replace the boot code and zero
the DiskID. The effect is the partition signature is invalidated and
Windows has to regenerate a new DiskID, recalculate the signatures and
assign new drive letters, abandoning any previous assignments. And now it
boots.
As far as Norton AV, IMO, I'd dump it anyways. Never liked it. For a while
I was using Computer Associates Anti-virus. Now, I'm just using AVG for
free.
