Based on advice, I have purchased Acronis (on Ebay) and I love it. It's
amazing.
One question: what compression routine does it automatically use? The file
extension is simply ".tib". It compressed my disk by about half!

The programs on Ebay were downloads with unique serials. No box, no manual.
Yes, I did make my boot CD and tried it out. Worked like a charm.
I don't know the difference between this "whole drive backup" and disk
"cloning."

I get it. Thanks.
Now a second question, how is it possible to image my hard disk with 7GB of
information in less than five minutes???
The image is about half that.
Seems wild. Am I likely doing something wrong?

Time sounds about right. It`s obviously a compressed image.
You can check the image in the menus.
Which version did you get ?. I use TI 8.

I still don't understand how it copies 7GB in under 5 minutes. A normal copy
procedure couldn't do that! What is going on??

When doing a drive, not a files and folders, backup TI does not go thru the
file system.
It just grabs the file structures and figures out which sectors to copy.
Running the program at
http://www./standards.com/index.htm...peDistribution, will give you
an idea of how long it takes to use the windoze API to just get certain
characteristics of the files, without reading the actual file content. How
long does this take?

What does backup TI mean?
Obviously, it's the file itself that's important to be saved.

TI does not work thru the file system to copy files when doing a drive,
rather than a "files and folders", backup.
All it does is grab the file structures to determine what sectors to copy.
