restoring a NT backup tape on Backup Exec

| Hi,
Have got some tapes that were backup up by a previous employee on NT
Backup from which I need to get data from. We now have Backup Exec
v10.0, which wont catalogue the tape.
If I load up NTi Backup (Windows 2000), the tape drive is greyed out
and we are unable to select.
We have tried stopping the Backup Exec services and the tape drive is
still greyed out in NTi Backup. We know NTi Backup used to work with
this drive, as it was used to create a backup at differnet stages of
teh server build. Once we installed Veritas Backup Exec, this was no
longer selectable.
Anyone have any ideas?
cheers

| Hi Kevin,
If Backup Exec 10 can see the tape drive, then you may need to use the
"storage based media catalogs". This esentially means that BE will scan the
tape and build a catalog from the data contained on it. BE is compatible
with NT backup tapes and should be able to catalog and restore the data.
Look in Tools->Options->Catalog for that setting and uncheck it. Then
inventory and catalog the media again.
If that doesn't work, it would seem as though NT backup may not be able to
see the drive because it was disabled in "Removable Storage Manager". This
is in the computer management snap-in. Since BE doesn't use RSM for media
management, it accesses the drive directly. To restore through NT backup,
you may need to stop the BE services, and then check RSM to see if the
device is enabled and working there.
Hope this helps some. Let me know if you still have problems.
